Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Oak and Luna

October 27 2021

During the month of October, we're proud to partner with National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF) to raise awareness and help women diagnosed with breast cancer. Read on to learn more about it.

Oak and Luna goes Pink

During Pink October, Oak and Luna partnered with NBCF to provide awareness and help for women in the U.S. who are battling breast cancer. NBCF does fantastic work for these women, providing resources, education, guidance, and empowering messages - not only for the woman fighting breast cancer but for their loved ones as well. We're very proud to be able to support their efforts.

Wearing your pink ribbon during October or year-round is a great way to show support, but if you're looking to go bigger, there's much more you can do. Read on to learn you can help.

Why Pink October?

While we're all about designed jewelry here at Oak and Luna, this month, we want to clear the stage for something even more important: You and your health.

According to breastcancer.org, breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among women, except for skin cancers. And when detected early, a patient's chances of survival dramatically increases. In fact, according to Cancer.net, 63% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage, for which the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. This means shining the spotlight on detection methods, self-exams and symptoms isn't just important - it's absolutely life-saving.

How can you take action?

There's a lot you can do for yourself and others. Start by doing a self-exam - it's quick, easy, and it can save your life. The experts at NBCF give us the step-by-step. Please visit this link to learn how to perform a breast self-exam.

Send these instructions to your girlfriends, sisters, mothers, and other women in your life and encourage them to check themselves, too. If you notice any changes then, make an appointment for a professional exam. During the exam, your doctor or healthcare provider will perform a more thorough visual and manual test to check for abnormalities or lumps.

If needed, or based on your age, your doctor will also refer you to an ultrasound test or a mammogram (an x-ray of your breasts). Every woman should have regularly schedule exams and women 40 and over (and many younger women) should have annual mammograms to help detect potential breast cancer at the earliest possible time.

Support the cause

To support NBCF and their important cause, Oak and Luna jewelry designers created a unique, limited-edition necklace. The pink ribbon symbolizes the braveness of the women dealing with breast cancer and our hope of a cure. Wear it during Pink October and after to keep breast cancer in the conversation and help women learn more about what they can do.

You can also help by sharing information, resources, and empowering messages - for example, by getting your girlfriends to read this article or the self-exam instructions on the NBCF site. Every single piece of information will help raise awareness.
